Job Entry Plan
My ultimate
goal is to become a superintendent of a
school district. In order to do this to the best of my ability, I will have to
have a goal and strategy to help steer me through the process. I would first
like to obtain an Assistant Superintendent position in order to become more
informed about issues in education that
I may not be familiar with. I feel that this will help the learning curve when
I finally become a superintendent. Once I become a new superintendent of a
district, I will have to make smart and
targeted decisions during the first year. I will need to crawl, walk , then
run. On the first day that I become a superintendent, I will probably be at a
board meeting where they approve me. I will make sure that after the meeting
and I am approved, I will make a conscious effort to meet and speak with all of
the board members. I believe that making a good first impression is one the
most important aspects of building relationships and getting things done.
During the first week, I will make an effort to meet the staff at the
administration building and build relationships with them. I will also visit
all of the schools in the district and meet with the principals of those schools.
At the meeting with the principals, I will tell them about myself and my
philosophy of education. I will them speak with them about their campus. What
they like about their campus and what they do not like. I believe that this is
a good way to facilitate issues that the campus may have in a non-threatening
manner. While at the schools, I will also introduce myself to the secretarial
staff and get to know a little about them. Most school districts have a
convocation at the beginning of each school year. This will be the first
opportunity for me to introduce myself to the entire district staff. This will
be one of the most important days in my short career as superintendent. I would
like to convey the message of support, collaboration, success, happiness,
trustworthiness, and hard working. A power-point presentation showing my
educational philosophy in a lightened up way along with the district’s
strengths will be included in my presentation.
During the first month of my
superintendency, I will be involved in community activities as much as
possible. I will be visible at sporting events and other school functions. It
would probably be a good idea to invite the community to the school one evening
to a “get to know the superintendent” night at one of the schools. This can
help build trust and relationships with members of the community. During the
first month, I will also have more one on one meetings with the building
principals to get a gage on what is going right and what changes may need to be
made if any. Taking the administrative team to lunch one day would also be on
the schedule to help ease any tension or barrier that they may have. Getting to
know the board members will also be a high priority during the first month. I
will need to gauge the intentions of all of the board members.
During the first year that I am
superintendent, I hope to achieve relationships with all relevant stakeholders.
I feel that this is one of the more important things that I can do as a
superintendent. If that relationship is built, I hope to be able to lead change
if needed and accentuate success even further. If the school community knows
who you are and are comfortable with you, that can help open up more doors to
effective change even if there is some dissention. I would also like all
administrators to know what my routine is after my first year as
superintendent. As far as meetings go, there will be a structure that we will
use to get the most out of our meetings. The meetings will go like this for
each month: Week 1: Meet with all of the principals for two hours to discuss
strategies, issues and information going on at the campuses. Week 2: Meet with
all of the administrators and directors to communicate concerns and address
issues that the group needs to know. Week 3: Meet with principals again. Week
4: Meet with principals on a one on one basis. This will be done at the home
campus of the principal. I would like to walk around the campus during these
meetings as well as meet in their office to discuss school business.
